Starting the school year with a celebration – and a plan
Sep 5, 2008
A group of school reform leaders from throughout the state is pushing a plan to improve Texas public schools.
Raise Your Hand Texas is sponsoring a rally at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Terrell Performing Arts Center, 400 Poetry Road, to start the school year with a celebration of students, teachers and the achievements of Texas public schools, organizers said.
But there will be more. Raise Your Hand Texas is proposing a new round of Texas school reform that includes:
Recreating the accountability system;
ensuring safe and orderly schools;
consolidation of teacher quality and incentive programs;
provide universal, full-day pre-kindergarten;
redesigning high school graduation requirements to include concentration areas in math and science, fine arts and careers and technology;
and supporting school choice with districts, between districts, through magnet schools and well-run charter schools.
Mike Moses, former Texas Commissioner of Education and Dallas schools superintendent also will speak.
