Terrell
Fourth possible victim comes forward in Mata case

Jun 22, 2008

Police are investigating another possible victim in connection with sexual assault charges brought against third-grade teacher Salvador Mata, 51.

Police were contacted Thursday evening by the family of another third-grade girl from Terrell’s Long Elementary School, Police Chief Todd Miller confirmed.

He said Friday that police haven’t had a chance to fully question the girl. He said investigators have spent time at the school and believe there may be other victims.

Mr. Mata was arrested at his home June 15. He is being held in the Kaufman County jail on three counts of sexual assault of a child. Bail has been set at $750,000.

Police began the investigation June 14, when parents of a third-grade girl contacted them. The girl told police Mr. Mata had pulled her and three other girls into his classroom on June 3 and locked the door.

Three of the four girls were then assaulted. Physical evidence corroborates the story.

Mr. Mata has taught bilingual education in the district since 2000. He has been placed on administrative leave. A special executive session of the Terrell school board has been called for Sunday evening to discuss personnel matters.
