Services set for Joyce Jean Berendzen

Joyce Jean Berendzen, 74, of Crandall, passed away May 15 at her home surrounded by family.

Mrs. Berendzen was born March 6, 1934 in Jones County, Miss. and was the oldest of seven children, all of whom she helped raise. She attended high school in Sandersville, Miss. and Asbury College in Kentucky.

After moving to Texas, she became a credit union manager in Rockwall. She left that position and became a homemaker when she married John Berendzen in 1983.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Beredzen was always involved in church work. Her father, Rev. Richard Hodge started a Congregational Methodist Church in Jones County, Miss. and then later, she was “Singles Dept. Leader” at Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church.

Most recently, she was very active in her membership with Central Baptist Church in Crandall. She was past president of Crandall/Combine Senior Citizens and enjoyed many hobbies: cooking, reading, canning, making candies and jelly, playing cards and Scrabble, collecting dolls and “Snow Village” scenes and visiting with beloved family and friends.

Travel was a big part of Mrs. Berendzen’s life and she was able to visit all 50 states, western Canada, Ecuador, Brazil, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Panama and enjoyed cruises to the Gulf and Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Richard and Sallie Mae Hodge; brothers: Jerry and Brent Hodge, beloved Uncle Rowan Parker and Aunt Eva Parker.

She is survived by her husband, John Berendzen; children: James Robert Walker, Kathy Walker Parker, Eva Christine Rogers and husband, Phil; step-children: Ralph and D’Uan Berendzen, Virginia and Pinckney Smith, Craig and Dana Berendzen and Melanie Berendzen; 10 grandchildren: Zoey Rogers, Dr. Kenneth Berendzen, Cory Berendzen, Jared Davis, Phillip Rogers, Jessica Smith, Chase Berendzen, Jacob Smith, Jaymie Berendzen and Andrew Berendzen; four great grandchildren and siblings: Eva and Tommy Parker, Jack and Peggy Hodge, Kent and Shelly Hodge, all of Laurel, Miss., and Jackie Jones of Edinburgh, TX as well as a host of other friends and relatives.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2008 at Central Baptist Church, 1749 S. FM 148, Crandall, TX, 75114 with interment to follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Scurry.
