Man dies after standoff

Kaufman County sheriff’s deputies found a man dead in a closet, an apparent suicide, after he held them off all day Sunday, a sheriff’s department spokesman said.

Deputies were called to CR 221, north of Forney, about 11 a.m. Sunday by a woman who said her husband was threatening suicide and had several guns.

The tactical squad was called and officers began trying to talk to the man at about 1:30 p.m. He had few responses.

Officers decided to enter the home about 5:30 p.m. and the man retreated to a closet. Deputies broke through the closet wall and used a chemical spray to try to flush the man out. When they saw smoke coming from the closet, they entered and found the man’s body.

He had a single gunshot wound to the head.

His identity was not immediately released.
