Walk to the stable

For 10 years, the angels have announced Jesus birth above Cornerstone Baptist Church in Terrell.

Or at least church members have repeated their words time and time again for those participating in Walk with the Wise Men.

The Nativity at the church is more than a play – participants have a chance to walk through Bethlehem, hear the angels and go to the stable. The story continues through the resurrection.

This year, two other Terrell churches are participating in the 11th annual production. New Mount Calvary and La Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana are helping mount the pagent.

"For me, right off the bat it was a blessing," Mr. Perez said.

He said his members were eager to participate and some who attend services only a few times a year have gotten enthusiastic.

About 15 of his members are working in the production.

In the future, the production may be presented all in Spanish, Mr. Perez said, for one night of performances.

Members of those churches are participating as actors, with refreshments and parking, said Beth Brown, a Cornerstone member who is coordinating publicity.

She said inviting the other churches was pastor Bob Price’s way of bringing different Terrell groups together.

“He thought why not bring the cultures together? It’s to bring the cultures together,” she said. Iglesia Bautista is Hispanic and New Mount Calvary predominantly black.

Walk witt the Wise Men

Walks through the Nativity begin every 20 minutes. Attendees are guided from scene to scene by a “wise man” telling the Christmas story. It allows participation in the story, Ms. Brown said, rather than just being an observer.

The production has become a local phenomena, drawing as many as 3,000 visitors a year.

The production begins at 7 p.m. and groups are escorted through until 9 p.m. Dec. 13, 14, 15, and 16. The church is on Highway 205 just north of Wal-Mart. Admission is free.

“We get big crowds so sometimes you have to be a little patient,” Ms. Brown said. Attendees wait in the sanctuary for their tour to start. There are refreshments in the church at the end.
