Last year’s first Spirit Challenge to benefit the Norville Children’s was wildly successful. Kaufman County students raised $121,000 – way over the $100,000 goal.

So this year the goal is even higher -- $150,000.

Throughout October students in Forney, Terrell, Kaufman, Crandall, Kemp and Scurry-Rosser will raise money for the Norville Children’s Shelter. They’ll hold dodgeball tournaments, collect pennies and sponsor fundraisers.

Then, on Nov. 7, the whole county is asked to participate by wearing a Spirit Challenge T-shirt. The design is being finalized and they will be available in schools and other locations by October.

“Last year, quite a bit was raised by employers buying shirts for employees,” said Jennie Moore, publicity coordinator.

Teachers and students in some districts also got to buy the opportunity to violate dress code by wearing the T-shirts and jeans.

Businesses have an opportunity to support the challenge by sponsoring the shirts. Sponsors will have their name listed on the back or name and logo for an additional amount. For additional information on sponsoring the challenge call Ms. Moore at 972-564—4055, ext. 1026.

The Norville shelter in Kaufman houses students from around the area who have been removed from their homes by Child Protective Services. They often arrive, sometimes in the middle of the night, with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.

The shelter provides a homey setting, complete with a backyard and barbecue for the children ranging in age from infants to teenagers.

The shelter receives state aid, but it’s never enough. It relies on monetary donations and donations of goods and services to remain open.
