Cotton Festival starts today
Sep 6, 2007
The annual Cotton Festival begins today (Sept. 6) at 5 p.m. and continues through Saturday downtown.
Highlights of this year’s 20th annual celebration will be the parade at 9 a.m. Saturday followed by the groundbreaking for a city gateway sign at 10:30 a.m. at Highway 175 and FM 741.
“Coming from Seagoville, we’re the gateway to Kaufman County,” said Kathy Mackey, who headed the committee that planned and raised money for the sign. The sign will be welcoming and includes landscaping.
“We need something there. Actually, it says Forney,” she said.
The sign will be 90-feet long with the city name and will be landscaped by the Texas Department of Transportation.
Several local developments including Heartland and Cartwright Range contributed to the sign.
Estimated cost is $60,000. The city expects to award the contract at the Sept. 20 council meeting and construction will begin almost immediately, Ms. Mackey said.
This year’s festival will feature a baking contest sponsored by Oncor and the fire department will be cooking barbecue to raise money.
Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight Friday and 9 a.m. to midnight Saturday.
