Crandall almost recognized
Aug 1, 2007
It was oh so close.
A few more black and economically disadvantaged students passing specific parts of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills and the Crandall school district would have remained recognized.
“It was just a few categories,” Superintendent Larry Watson said.
The district missed recognized status by the scores of black and economically disadvantaged students in math and science. To be recognized, 75 percent of students needed to pass the test. In mathematics, 64 percent of black and 74 percent of disadvantaged students passed. In science, it was even closer, 73 percent of disadvantaged students passed the tests. All other groups met the 75 percent standard.
There were a few areas in which students didn’t meet the standard because there were not enough students to count. Those areas don’t count toward the rating.
The state requires that all subpopulations meet standards to assure that the district works on all students.
Dr. Watson said the district already is targeting help to those students.
The situation was the same at the elementary and intermediate school – not enough students passed math and science. There weren’t enough black students at the school to count their scores. Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students missed the passing standard by just a few students.
The high school and middle school kept their recognized status and missed exemplary, the highest rating, by just a few categories. To be exemplary, 90 percent of students in all groups must pass the test. Scores in math and science were low. The lowest percentage in those subjects were the economically disadvantaged in math; 70 percent passed the test.
