Mabank tradition continues
The 52nd Mabank Rodeo and Western Week, sponsored by the Mabank Volunteer Fire Department, begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday with games and bed races at 8 p.m. at the Mabank Pavilion. That’s followed at 7 p.m. Wednesday by the Queen’s Dinner at the Mabank Fire Station.
The rodeo begins at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Andrew Gibbs Memorial Arena, on Business Highway 175 in Mabank..
Saturday is the big day with a parade at 4 p.m. at the arena and a dance at the pavilion after the rodeo.
Rodeo admission is $5 for adults and $3 for under 13. Five and younger are free. Rodeo entry fee is $60.
All proceeds benefit the fire department.

FM 90 near Mabank gets redo
Work on FM90 from south of FM1391 to FM1836 is scheduled to begin May. 1.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) willinclude rehabilitating the existing pavement and adding three-foot shoulders to the roadway. Project cost is about $2 million.
“With this project, we hope to enhance safety on this particular roadway,” said Jan Heady, area engineer of the TxDOT Kaufman County Area Office.
Crews will work weekdays from shortly after dawn to shortly before dusk. Daily lane closures will take place on the two-lane road with one lane open to one-way traffic while the remaining lane is closed. Work is expected to last six months.

Kemp, Mabank, Crandall compete in golf regionals
Students from Kemp, Mabank, Crandall and Kaufman competed in a UIL Region II AAA golf tourney April 23-24.
In girls competition, Mabank finished sixth and Crandall ninth.
Chantry McMahahn of Kaufman placed second, Amanda Genovese of Crandall finished fifth and Sarah Bivins of Mabank ended 15th.
In boys play, Kemp finished eighth and Mabank ended 14th.
Chase Traughber of Kemp ended in a three-way tie for sixth and Dalton Fugit of Kemp tied for ninth.

Mabank’s Lakeview honored
Lakeview Elementary School has been recognized by the Texas Education Agency for its improving academic performance.
The school was named a Distinguished Progress school based on federal No Child Left Behind standards. To be recognized the school had to have more than 40 percent economically disadvantaged students and have improved to exemplary status.
Lakeview was ranked exemplary for the 2006 school year and commended in mathematics and science. About 68 percent of students are considered poor.
The school was rated academically acceptable only three years ago.

Mabank firefighters host fish fry
Get a good dinner, visit a while and help the Mabank Volunteer Fire Department.
The department is hosting a fish fry from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at the fire station, 111 E. Mason St.
There is no set price; donate what you can.
Free blood pressure checks will be available.
