The Combine council discussed changes to the city budget during a brief public hearing and then approved the slight increase.
“This is the first year for ad valorem taxes,” so some adjustments were needed, council member Mitzi Boyd said after the meeting. “We didn’t have to delete anything. That’s a good thing.”
The city has collected less in property taxes than anticipated, but revenue from sales tax, franchise taxes, building permits and interest were higher than estimated.
The original budget estimated $369,240 in revenue and $368,750 in expenses. The revised budget includes $372,542 in revenue and $371,218 in expenses.
The council now will begin work on the 2006-2007 budget.
Residents raised questions about an agreement with the county for road work.
Mayor Keith Taylor said he had talked to Pct. 4 County Commissioner Jim Deller and been assured that the county would agree to do the work the city pays for.
But some residents were concerned that Mr. Deller, running for re-election in November, might lose his position and asked the mayor to talk to Democratic candidate James Nixon Sr.
Council member Paul Norman said Mr. Nixon might be more willing to supply services before the election. “Get him to agree before the election.”
Mr. Taylor also discussed his comments before a public hearing on the proposed Trans-Texas Corridor. The corridor would carry vehicle, train and truck traffic and have a channel for utilities.
The preferred path under consideration would cut through Kaufman County and through Combine.
Most residents at the Monday meeting were adamantly opposed to the project and encouraged the council to pass a resolution opposing it.
