Waterline grant awarded to Terrell

State Rep. Betty Brown presented Terrell officials with a $235,000 grant Tuesday to help repair water lines to 137 residents along five streets.

“I think it will save tax money. I just wish it could be for other parts of town as well, but it will save the taxpayers’ money so this is a good thing,” council member Jack Jones said.

The grant is from the Office of Rural Community Affairs to replace undersized, dilapidated water distribution lines with larger lines and water mains on Adelaide Street, Wheeler Street, Myers Street, Frances Street and Grove Street. Residents of those streets have low to moderate income.

“These funds provide for basic necessities most of us take for granted,” said Mark Wyatt, Director of ORCA’s Community Development division. “Rural communities that have clean drinking water, adequate wastewater treatment systems and suitable public infrastructure are better prepared for real economic opportunities.”

The grant was approved by the State Review Committee, a 12-member committee of locally elected officials appointed by the governor to advise the agency on the use of its community development funds and, in consultation with ORCA’s executive director and agency staff, review and approve grant and loan applications and associated funding awards of eligible counties and municipalities.
