The Forney fire department was desperate.
A man with his critically ill one-month-old baby showed up at the Forney fire station. But he was deaf and firefighters couldn’t communicate.
“We didn’t have a sign-language translator on our list of translators so we called the schools,” Tiffany Hopkins, department spokeswoman said.
They quickly located Cristal Jocoy and she rushed to the fire station in less than five minutes.
She helped the father talk to firefighters and then went in the ambulance with the baby and family to the hospital.
Unfortunately, the baby didn’t make it and died at the hospital, but the fire department says it is thankful for the quick, vital service of Ms. Jocoy.
She will receive a commendation at 6 p.m. Thursday at the police/fire department building, 100 E. Aimee. The department also is donating a Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) to the family to help them communicate with emergency personnel and others.
