Using an online survey, students of the new North Forney High School were able to pick their mascot and school colors. The school board approved the choice of the falcons and the colors black and blue.

The new school is under construction and is expected to open next year.

The district took online nominations for the mascot and colors through the district’s Web site in July. After narrowing the options to the top four, there was another online vote.

The top two nominations for the school mascot were the Falcons and the Roughriders and the top two school color combinations were black and blue and black and orange.

“One of the things that resulted from the initial survey was that black was one of the colors that received the most amount of votes,” said Larry Coker, Forney’s communications director. “Based on that factor, we felt the community had the desire to maintain a connection between the schools and with the district as a whole. I think it is a great sign of unity in the community that even though there will be two high schools, this is still one district and one community and there will be a tremendous amount of support for both schools not just one school over another.”

Forney High School colors are black and yellow and the mascot is the jackrabbit.

In the last step, students who will attend the new school cast their vote. The 7th and 8th grade students at Brown Middle School, and the 9th grade students that have been rezoned to North Forney cast paper ballots on the mascot and color combination during the first week of school.
