Prospect Mountain, a rehab facility that helps the disabled through horseback riding, is working like crazy to raise money. The horses need to be cared for and fed, a tractor would be a big help, but, mostly, Prospect wants a new $6,000 saddle that will allow riders with a variety of disabilities to experience the joys of riding a horse.
They also need additional funds to aid more riders. There are 10 on the waiting list to ride, but sponsors are needed.
The non-profit agency helps mostly children from throughout the area improve their physical conditioning and mental strength through riding.
Matt has seizures every day, except when he’s riding.
Mark, 17, who can not see, hear or talk, wasn’t sure what was happening when he was placed on a horse – there was the rough horsehair, unfamiliar saddle and those holding him on. Then the horse took a step, he became still, his hands fell to his sides and he lifted his face to the sky.
The charity is applying for grants, looking for sponsors and holding fundraisers, director Theresa Lisenby said.
The next fundraiser is a garage and bake sale Sept. 27 at 1004 S. Washington St. in Kaufman. Mount Olive Baptist Church of Scurry is helping with the bake sale.
In an ongoing fundraiser, the Prospect is selling entertainment coupon books for $20.
