Two would-be copper thieves ran Wednesday when Kaufman County sheriff’s deputies and Crandall police showed up about 12:40 p.m. at a power substation on FM 741 just north of Crandall.

It took an almost five-hour search and a little help from the Dallas police helicopter before Daniel Lairsey 27, of Quinlan was arrested in the area.

Later in the afternoon, John Kubat 34, of Mesquite, also was arrested in connection with the robbery.

Both men are being held in the Kaufman County jail.

The thieves did more than $10,000 in damage attempting to steal copper from the substation. All the copper with recovered, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
