In a heart attack minutes count. That’s why the state now requires an automated external defibrillator at every University Interscholastic League event. Some districts keep them in every school.
Kaufman High School is receiving one of the units. An AED, about the size of a lunchbox, is a device that shocks the heart to restore a normal heartbeat. It is the single most effective treatment for restarting the heart after sudden cardiac arrest. With clear instructions, it can be used by non-medical personnel.
Donating the AEDs is part of the hospital system’s contribution to the community.
