Lisa Roberts and Sarah Murff, Kaufman County 4-H members, took top honors last week in the 3-year-old stock horse futurity division of the state 4-H horse show.
Lisa took first place in both parts of the futurity which requires riders and horses to complete specific patterns in a quiet, controlled manner and was first place overall.
Sarah placed fourth overall.
The event was sponsored by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Texas 4-H offers four futurity programs -- yearling halter,
yearling longe line, 2-year old Western Pleasure and 3-year-old
Stock Horse Futurity.
Lisa and Sarah were required to work their horses individually on two different designated patterns, where they were judged on how they negotiated the pattern with their horse carefully controlled.
This event gives 4-H members an opportunity for young people to learn how to train and show a young horse, Carrie Sharp, AgriLife Extension agent for Kaufman County, said Carrie Sharp, AgriLife Extension agent for Kaufman County. Only parents and friends – no other family members or trainers – are allowed to help the 4-H members after May 1.
