You have to plan a school opening way in advance. There’s not only a building to finish and curriculum to plan, you’ve got to get to the really important things. What will the school colors be and what’s the mascot?

Future Forney North students and parents have a chance to put in their two cents at https://webapps.forneyisd.net/forney/newspost2/asp/newsposting.asp?id=1962. Just complete the survey. There will be a chance to vote on finalists in July.

The school is on schedule and the district is working to make the move for students and parents as easy as possible.

Students beginning the ninth grade in August that eventually will go to Forney North High School will be grouped together in core classes at Forney High School.

“We want the students to have the opportunity to begin to develop a cohesive relationship that they can carry on to North High School for the remainder of their high school careers,” said Larry Coker, the district’s communications director.

The district already has named Dr. Joe Kucera as the Forney North principal. Dr. Kucera comes from the Waco Midway district and will join Forney July 1. He will work with Forney North freshman this school year at Forney High School.

When Forney North opens, ninth and 10th grade students that live north of Highway 80 are zoned to attend North High School. Students south of Highway 80 will attend Forney High School. This alignment allows for a complete feeder system from elementary grade levels to high school, district officials said.

There are some exceptions to the attendance zoning.

  • Students who are in the North High School zone, but who have older siblings that graduated from, or who will be juniors or seniors at Forney High School during the 2009-2010 school year will be allowed to request a transfer to Forney High School.

  • North students who have a parent or legal guardian that graduated from Forney High School will also be allowed to request a transfer to Forney High School.

  • Students transferred to Johnson Elementary may request a transfer back to Forney High School. This is only available to students who transferred into Johnson by the 2007-2008 school year. Students who transfer to Johnson Elementary for the 2008-2009 school year will attend North High School and are not allowed to request a transfer back to Forney High School.
