While seatbelt use during the day has topped 82 percent of motorists, many still don’t buckle-up at night, And that has tragic consequences, especially among teens and young adults.
Of the 2,926 16- to 20-year-old passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2006, 68 percent were unrestrained. During the daytime 57 percent of the 16- to 20-year-old occupants killed were not wearing seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
That’s why this year’s national Click It or Ticket campaign has a special focus on night time seat belt use and use among teens and young adults.
The Forney police department is joining the campaign and officers will be on the lookout for those not using seatbelts. The special enforcement will continue through the Memorial Day weekend to June 1.
Increased law enforcement activities will be conducted nationwide during the 2008 Click It or Ticket mobilization. Paid national advertising, as well as state advertising, will support the effort by promoting the life-saving benefits of regular seat belt use.
While the special emphasis will last through June 1, officers will continue to ticket those who are not buckled up during the rest of the year.
