It’s hard to tell how many strolled through the Terrell Heritage Jubilee over the weekend. Since there are no tickets, it's hard to keep track of attendance.
But Terrell tourism director Sarah Kegerreis is sure it set an attendance record.
“The vendors did well. The carnival did well. On Saturday there wasn’t a place to put another person,” Ms. Kegerreis said.
She guesstimated that 12,000 to 15,000 attended.
The annual event boasts a carnival, business expo, quilt show and arts & crafts vendors. There also was a narrated driving tour of Terrell, a bikers rally and rodeo in conjunction with the event.
Ms. Kegerreis said the business expo spaces sold out a month in advance and vendor spaces ten days ahead.
It’s difficult to say what the impact on the Terrell economy is, she said. But visitors eat in restaurants, stay in hotels and fill their cars with gas.
This year KART, Kaufman Area Rapid Transit, provided shuttle service to Tanger Center. “People could shop and come back without braving the traffic,” she said.
A Thursday storm that muddied parking lots near Ben Gill Park made the shuttle even more important.
Security also was improved this year. Police reported only a handful of arrests for minor violations. Police arranged to borrow a Skywatch, a cab for an officer lifted above the crowd, from Rockwall for a better view.
Work on next year’s event begins in about two weeks. It’s set for April 17 to 19, 2009.
