The two calls came just minutes apart — one from a homeowner who said he had fired a shot out the window after seeing someone outside, the other reporting a serious accident.
The two turned out to be related.
The homeowner, who lives in the 5000 block of State Highway 243, east of Kaufman, apparently hit a teen when he fired a handgun through a window about 10:40 p.m. Saturday, Kaufman County sheriff’s officials said in a statement.
The wounded boy ran next door, where he was staying. The wounded man, a woman and her son were driving in a pickup on 243 to the hospital.
The truck was involved in a head-on collision with an apparently drunk driver and the woman was killed. The wounded man was taken to Parkland Hospital by helicopter and the other man was treated and released at Presbyterian Hospital in Kaufman.
The Dallas Morning News said the woman was pediatric nurse June Nalls. She was with her son, Devin Nalls, and his wounded friend, when a car driven by Agustin Renteria, 27, of Kaufman crosse the line, striking the car in front of him, then colliding with Ms. Nalls car.
The investigation is continuing.
