Daniel Joseph Griffin was convicted of murder Friday in the death of Cheri Lynn Dugan, 38, and of two counts of aggravated sexual assault.

Ms. Dugan was found stabbed to death in her home just east of Kaufman in October 2006. Mr. Griffen tied up Ms. Dugan’s three teenaged daughters and sexually assaulted one of them who was 15. One of the girls managed to free herself later and called police from a neighbor’s home.

Mr. Griffin was arrested in Houston and remains in the Kaufman County jail. His sentencing is set for Feb. 1.

District Attorney Rick Harrison had asked for a capital murder conviction that would carry a sentence of life without parole. But the jury returned a murder conviction. The maximum possible sentence is life with the possibility of parole.

Mr. Griffin was dating Ms. Duggan’s 19-year-old daughter, Christina Harrison who is not related to the DA. Mr. Griffin and Ms. Harrison had moved in with Ms. Duggan, who worked for the Kaufman school district.
