Almost 50 students from around the county entered essays in contest calling attention to recycling. Nine won awards.

The awards were presented as a party earlier this month at the Kaufman County Library. The library and the Kaufman County Environmental Co-op sponsored the event.

The winners were:

Second grade: Jasmine Mann and Hanna Poteet of Kemp Primary School and Evelin Ayon of Terrell’s Kennedy Elementary

Third grade: Cailey Suarez-Berryhill of Scurry-Rosser, Deven Pokhrel of Kaufman Christian School and Vivian Click of Wednesday Homeschool

Fourth grade - Alden Marshall and Carly Manning of Mabank Central Elementary and Bobby Butler of Kaufman Christian School

Forty-six students wrote essays on “Why we should recycle.” They were asked to write at home using the Internet as a resource.

Each winner received a blue fleece pullover made from recycled soda bottles, two Dairy Queen coupons for a free treat and a framed certificate.

“The Co-op is very excited that we had this many students and families take interest in this project and we hope that next year we will be able to reach more children,” Co-op director Marilyn May said in a statement.
