Saturday offers a chance to see the romantic – and not so romantic – view of the past. Storytellers in rough wool pants held up by suspenders. A shuttle weaving through a loom. And, after dark, a candlelit walk through tales of the past.
Then there’s the sweat of reenacters in wool Civil War uniforms.
“I think the weather will hold out. It will be sunny and hot,” said Yasma Holland, with the Kaufman County Historical Commission.
The annual Kaufman County Archeology and Living History Fair begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and continues through 4 p.m. “Ghost walks” begin at dusk.
The fair at the county poor farm in Kaufman allows the commission to showcase the county and region’s history.
It’s an entertaining classroom for children. They see butter being churned and soap being made. Cowboy reenacters will be there at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Scenes of the Civil War will be played out at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Got some family mementos? Archeology stewards will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help explain old arrowheads or bits of pottery.
Other activities, including square and folk dancers, are scheduled throughout the day.
But the highlight of the day happens after dark. The ghost walk follows candlelit pathways that lead from actor to actor, each becoming the past. Each of the stops has a historic person to offer a story of the way things used to be.
Tickets for the fair are $3 for adults; $2 for children from 4 to 13; free for children under 4.
