Already time to think about next year

School has just started but seniors, juniors and counselors already are thinking about next year.

Districts are planning their college forums and counselors are beginning to put together scholarship application packets.

Forney High School will have a college information program from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 19 in the gym. A variety of colleges will be represented and financial aid information will be available. Parents are invited.

Kaufman High School will offer its first SAT study session from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29.

Many colleges and universities don’t wait for students to graduate before making admission decisions. Early admission decisions for competitive colleges such as Rice University in Houston may be made by December.

While state schools may have much later deadlines, applications for housing usually must be made by January. And students must fill out financial aid applications usually by March. That means parents must file income taxes early so that the completed form will be available to financial aid offices.

Filling out the applications can be time-consuming. They often require one or more essays and recommendations from teachers. Teachers appreciate students who ask early so that they are not stuck with a pile of letters to write just before deadline.

Students also must sign up for the SAT or ACT, the earlier the better so that they may take the test more than once to help improve scores.

Even juniors have to get into college mode. High schools will offer the PSAT in October. Scores on the test are used to qualify students for National Merit Scholarships and other scholarship programs.
