Only one county school fails to meet federal goals

All Kaufman schools met their goals for annual yearly progress required by the federal No Child Left Behind act. Except Kemp High School.

The school missed the mark in reading because not enough students took the appropriate tests and in math because of performance and participation.

Superintendent Peter Running said earlier this month when state test scores were released that he was concerned about the high school. He said the high school lost a math teacher early in the year and could not find a certified replacement until the spring semester.

The school also will have a new principal this year and the district has been working with teachers.

To meet the federal progress goals, schools must test at least 95 percent of students; 60 percent must pass the English/language arts TAKS test and 50 percent the math test. High schools and districts are also rated on the 2006 graduation rate, while elementary and middle schools are rated on attendance rates as well as test scores and participation.

Data for all students, as well as black, Hispanic, white, economically disadvantaged, special education and limited English proficient are analyzed.

Statewide, 86 percent of districts and 79 percent of schools met the goal.
