The sweet smell of wood shavings filled the county fair barns Tuesday, prepared for the carefully prepped animals about to bed down.

Seth Corder and Landun Charles of Scurry-Rosser High School unload at the fairgrounds.
Students from around the county are ready for the annual Junior Livestock show. Animals moved in Tuesday and Wednesday and some judging starts Thursday.

On Friday and Saturday there will be carnival rides and food with a barbecue Saturday afternoon.

“With all the parents coming we’ll have quite a few here,” said Carrie Sharp, a Kaufman County Extension Agent who helps coordinate the annual event.

There’s also a creative arts division with more than 600 entries. On Tuesday, there was a steady stream of teachers and parents bringing in creative works.

They will be judged Thursday.

There also are several horticultural categories for edible and non-edible plants. There’s also a food division with check-in on Thursday.

The fair is free and open to the public.
