TYLER – A federal grand jury has indicted Harrison Havens, Jr., 55, of Mabank on charges he used the Internet to stockpile and distribute child pornography.
The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Mr. Havens Tuesday in New York following his April 4 federal indictment on one count of transporting and four counts of possessing child pornography. If convicted, Mr. Havens faces up to 20 years in federal prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
"Texans will not tolerate criminals who prey upon children," said Texas Attorney General Abbott. His office’s Cyber Crimes Unit was in charge of the investigation.
Cyber Crimes Unit investigators conducted a search of Mr. Havens’ residence after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children indicated that he was distributing child pornography over the Internet. Analysis of computers and external media confiscated at his home revealed several videos of child pornography. At that time, Mr. Havens was working as a waste treatment facility manager.
The case is one of many pursued under Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative announced by U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales earlier this year. The project encourages the use of multi-jurisdictional task forces to investigate and prosecute the sexual exploitation of children over the Internet. In addition to tough law enforcement, project members encourage community-wide campaigns to assist victims and to educate parents, other adults, and children about Internet safety.
